Chalfont St Giles receives Royalty

Chalfont St Giles is to receive a royal visit on Thursday afternoon (July 24).

Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall are to visit Milton's Cottage in Deanway, Chalfont St Giles, as part of the village celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of the poet's birth.

The royal couple will take tea in the cottage garden with the cottage trustees, including Lord Howe, chairman of the Milton Cottage Trust, and will unveil a commemorative plaque.

As a memento of the visit, Lord Howe will present The Prince and The Duchess with a limited edition copy of Paradise Lost, illustrated by William Blake.

Lord Howe said: "My fellow trustees and I are very honoured that their Royal Highnesses are paying us this visit. MIlton's Cottage contains a wealth of exhibits which collectively tell the story of this extraordinary man, whose influence is felt to this day in so many facets of our national life. The interest shown in our museum by The Prince and Duchess is very much appreciated."

The poet and political thinker John Milton fled London for Chalfont St Giles in 1665 in order to escape plague and finished Paradise Lost there and began its sequel, Paradise Regained.

The Queen Mother and The Queen visited his cottage in 1977 and 1987 respectively.
