District councillor who made a huge contribution
Friends and colleagues have paid tribute to a Chalfont St Giles parish and district councillor who made a huge contribution to the village.
Terry Cave, 65, of Milton Field, died in Berkhamsted on July 15, after a three year battle against cancer.
He became a major force in local politics in the area after volunteering to become chairman of its Residents Association in 2004.
Soon elected onto both the parish and Chiltern District Council one of his most significant achievements was successfully lobbying the Rural Housing Trust to plan to build affordable housing in the village and convincing residents it was right for the area.
Fred Nolan, president of Chalfont St Giles Residents' Association, said: "Terry was an inspiring and volatile presence, always aware that preserving our village way of life requires constant vigilance and positive action and always ready to do something about it.
"He will be sorely missed."
Gordon Patrick, vice chairman of the parish council, said: "All of us on the council found Terry to be kind and warm and he will be missed. He was one of the best ever to fill the role of chairman of the planning committee. What he achieved for the good of this village in his years on the council was remarkable."
Andrew Scott-Priestly, branch chairman of the village Conservatives, said: "Terry was such a bundle of energy, a persuasive politician and he got things done.
"His crowning glory, of course, was his success in promoting and winning the argument for affordable housing in the Village - it is sad that he left us before he was able to see his vision turned into reality."
Rob Barber, fellow CDC member for Chalfont St Giles, said: "Terry was an amazingly forceful and driven person. It will take many people to fill the numerous roles that are now sadly vacant.
"Its astounding to think that he found the time to serve so effectively on both the Parish and District Councils, as Chairman of the Residents' Association, as well as being a devoted partner, father & grandfather. Terry was a great friend & colleague and we will all miss him dearly."
Born in Bournemouth, Mr Cave left his hometown at the age of 18 on his beloved motorbike where he joined Dunlop Semtex as a management trainee before becoming Regional Sales Manager at Securicor.
After working for three years in South Africa he returned to become Group Chief Executive of computer networking company Sintrom and his excellent reputation for managing and building high-tech software companies saw him constantly head-hunted.
His first marriage with Heather ended in divorce but not before the couple had two children - Alex and Karen.
A few years later on a golfing holiday back in his home city he met Fern Robinson and after a whirlwind romance the pair happily set up home in Amersham before moving on to Chalfont St Giles.
Many of Mr Cave's friends, colleagues, and family members packed out Chalfont St Giles Parish Church on July 21 for his funeral.
