Dog rescued at golf course
by Kathy Miller
FIREFIGHTERS were asked to abandon their hose pipes and pick up spades instead when they were called out to dig a Jack Russell out of a drain pipe at a golf course.
The dog ran off from the public footpath that runs through Oaklands Park golf club, Chalfont St Giles and found his way down a 15-metre long overflow pipe, where he promptly got stuck, requiring both the detective and digging skills of a Gerrards Cross fire crew to rescue him.
Ian Donnelly, general manager of the club said: "The dog must have been an inquisitive and left the path to chase something. It was a one in a million chance that he found the beginning of the pipe, because it was dark, and then he must have chased whatever it was down the pipe, before getting stuck."
Someone at Gerrards Cross fire station knew the mobile number of the head gamekeeper Dominic Lewis, who was on his way back from Birmingham when he received the call on Sunday evening.
Mr Lewis was able to explain where to find the end of the pipe and the Red Watch fire crew dug down to free the dog. It took them an hour and a half to reach the dog, which they did, just as the deputy head greenkeeper Graham Down was arriving .
"Graham, who comes from a farming background and is a real animal lover, drove in from home to help and arrived just as the dog was being handed over to his owner," said Mr Donnelly. "So Graham's moment as a hero was missed."
Mr Donnelly said that any damage caused by the dog and the diggers was minimal and that everyone at the club was delighted that the story had a happy ending.
"It would be nice to find out how the dog is now. We hope he's fine."
