Illegally stored fireworks seized

Posted by Graham Spence on Oct 27, 08 11:45 AM in Crime

Fireworks have been seized by Trading Standards Standards officers in Chalfont St Peter as they were being illegally stored.

Following information from the Police, Officers discovered a large quantity of fireworks stored in a van in Chalfont St Peter. Further reports indicated that fireworks were being sold by a man in a van. Investigations are continuing.

Margaret Dewar, portfolio holder for community services said, "Trading Standards rely on the general public to assist us with information. I urge the public to tell the relevant agencies of any dangerous practices that may put lives at risk, so they may take the appropriate action. Contact Consumer Direct 08454 04 05 06 or Thames Valley Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Trading Standards State:
* Anyone storing fireworks in Buckinghamshire must be registered with Trading Standards.
* There are strict laws concerning the storage and sale of fireworks.
* Traders must show a licence or registration certificate when buying more than 50kg of fireworks.
* Traders must display notices about under-age sales and possession of fireworks in public.

The public are advised only to buy fireworks from reputable shops and never buy from car boot sales or a man in a van. They could be stolen and no one can be sure if they are safe. If you are offered fireworks in these circumstances please contact the police or trading standards. All fireworks must conform to the safety standard BS7114. We have concerns that some fireworks may have been illegally imported from Africa and South Asia and may not conform to BS7144.

We'd like to hear from you.
