Charities receive donation vow

Charities will still receive donations from the proceeds of the Chalfont St Giles village show, even though bad weather meant that this year's takings were disappointingly low.
Fred Nolan, honorary president of the show, confirmed that the show's profits this year came to just under £2000, which he said would be divided among the 11 charities and organisations that had applied for money.

The donations will be announced at the show's annual meeting on November 26.
The show took place on September 6 in Silsden Meadow, after several days of wet weather. Fewer people attended and those who came had to battle their way through mud.
Mr Nolan confirmed that the show's profits usually come to approximately £10 - 12,000 and that last year, the show's committee made donations amounting to £7,000 to 20 charities and organisations, including the twinning association, the tennis, bowling and youth clubs, the library and the elderly folks' fitness club.
He said that in addition to the up-front expenses for the show, which come to approximately £25,000, there had been an extra cost of recovering two transformers, which were stolen from the site after the show.
"Someone ran off with the two power transformers, which was a seriously unexpected expense as we had to pay a large fee for the recovery. They were found hidden under the Denham roundabout and the thief was arrested," he said.
Mr Nolan added that the organisers had been "bucked rather than set back" by the weather and that despite this, it had been "a remarkable show". He said that the committee is made up of "lively young people, who are full of ideas" and they are already discussing a possible theme for the 2009 show.
