Shop Talk: Livvy & Tom

Posted by Greg Burns on Nov 20, 08 12:08 PM in People

CSG-Shop-Talk.jpgOnline children's clothing company Livvy and Tom was set up by Chalfont St Giles mother-of-three Niki Hall, 42, in March 2006. The business is named after her two oldest children Olivia, eight, and Thomas, six.

Q: What sort of things do you sell?
A: I sell clothes for girls and boys aged six months to ten years old. The clothes are nice and bright. The little girls clothes have sequins on them which are very pretty. They are slightly different from what you would get in a supermarket. I have a small range of gifts for babies such as little night bags, laundry bags, rag dolls and a couple of other cuddly toys.

Q: Why did you decide to set up your own company?
A:
My background is sales in the travel industry. I was frustrated with the choice of children's clothes. Sometimes you would pay a lot of money and the quality was poor. I didn't like clothes that made little girls looking like teenagers before their time. I have always loved clothes. I choose everything myself and when people buy it I feel it's a personal compliment.

Q: How has business been lately?
A:
It has been quite slow. I haven't done a lot of advertising yet - a lot has been thorough word of mouth. A lot of people know me from school and craft fairs. A lot of local mums contact me when they need something. Over the Christmas period my sales are down on last year, not drastically but they are less. I am still selling and doing reasonably well.

Q: What is proving popular for Christmas gifts?
A:
I am selling a lot of nighties and pajamas. They are £20 and come in a nice little bag of their own. Not only are they lovely but they are quite a reasonable price as a gift. Also I have fleeces for little boys and the warmer dresses for girls.

Q: Where will your business take you in the future?
A:
I am thinking of starting a new range and calling it the Susanna range as I don't want my four-month-old baby girl feeling left out but I want it to be for boys as well so I need to think of a name that incorporates that.
