Taking back their library
Chalfont St Giles parish council is opening a new chapter in the life of the village library, now that its plans to buy the library building from Bucks County Council (BCC) have been approved.
The move means that the parish council, which for several years has met at the garden centre on School Lane, will be rehoused in the library, alongside the Chalfont St Giles tourist information office.
The new arrangement spells good news not only for those whose idea of bedtime reading is to flick through the minutes of parish council, but for the village as a whole, according to Mike Bedford, treasurer of the library.
Mr Bedford said: "We are currently paying rent to the council for the building. Now we won't be exposed to rent rises.
"It's good, because it means the village is in charge."
Parish council chairman Mike Stannard confirmed that purchase price is still confidential and that the parish council already has the money and will not be asking for donations.
He said: "I'm delighted that the parish council will have a proper home. It has been far from ideal to have all its administration handled from the clerk's spare bedroom."
Mr Stannard added: We will look at how best we can re-arrange the library space. The library is lending more books now than when it was run by County and we hope to keep it at that level."
Library chairman Tony Hoare confirmed that the libriary will still be linked to the county's computerised loans service and that books borrowed from other Buckinghamshire libraries, including mobiles, can be returned to Chalfont St Giles.
"If you have a Bucks library card, you can use it in precisely the same way as you did before," said Mr Hoare.
BCC said that the flat above the library, previously the district nurse's accommodation, is to be let on a 99 year lease to the NHS Trust.
Chalfont St Giles and Little Chalfont libraries have been run by volunteers since 2007. Both were praised in a recent BCC report, entitled 'Beyond the Cover - Novel Ideas for Buckinghamshire Libraries'.
David Wolstenholme, manager of Little Chalfont Library said there are no plans to buy it from County.
