Concerns over delayed development
Would-be home owners have been left fearing for the future after developers had to stop work because of financial pressures.
The Rural Housing Trust is now planning to hand over the scheme to another housing trust.
In a letter to people who expressed an interest in properties on the Garden Field site on Bowstride Lane, the company said that the current economic climate has left the trustees and its subsidiary, RHT Developments Ltd, "with no alternative but to decide to wind down our operations."
The RHT, whose president is The Princess Royal, confirmed in the letter, dated January 23, that it is "in advanced talks" with another housing association.
Alison Read, area programme manager, wrote that completion of the houses will go ahead later than expected and that RHT development staff have been made redundant.
A statement on the RHT's website said" "During the winding down process, the Trust will aim to ensure the handover of its housing schemes to like-minded organisations."
One woman, who received the letter on January 26 and asked not to be named, said she feared for the site if another housing association becomes involved. She said: "Who knows what will happen in the future?
"I'm very disappointed. It looks like they're quite confident and I have to hope so, but I don't know how long it will take."
The RHT was granted planning permission for 28 houses and maisonettes, 17 of which were to be offered for sale under a shared ownership scheme and 11 of which were to be available for rent.
No work has been carried out on the site since before Christmas. Last week, a spokesman for the RHT blamed the cold weather and said work would resume once the weather improved.
