Councillor swaps chamber for jungle

CSG-Lamb.jpgA Chalfont St Giles parish councillor who admits to being "well past retirement age" has just returned from a three-week trek across the jungles and mountains of Rwanda in search of gorillas.
Austrian-born Karoline Lamb of Bottrells Lane could not persuade any friends to join her. Instead, she planned her own itinerary and joined an organised tour to the gorillas' habitat, near the border with Congo.

CSG-Lamb2.jpg"The terrain was quite arduous. That's one reason why no one wanted to come," said Mrs Lamb, who is a widow.
Mrs Lamb and her companions, who were nearly 30 years her junior, traced the steps of the celebrated American naturalist Diane Fossey, whose 18-year study featured in the 1988 film 'Gorillas in the Mist', starring Sigourney Weaver.
Mrs Lamb explained that there are seven groups of gorillas in Rwanda, six of which are friendly to humans. There are 26 gorillas in each group and Mrs Lamb caught sight of 14.
She said: "Once we took pictures of a little one, only to see the enormous group leader come charging out and so we backed away."
On another occasion, the party hacked their way though the undergrowth and came within three metres of a group going about their early morning routines.
Mrs Lamb said that such trips are important because without tourism, the gorillas might vanish.
She trained by attending the Chalfont St Giles 60+ fitness group, by joining Simply Walks and by cycling.
"Old people's holidays need not just be in Bournemouth," she said. "Older people need to be more adventurous. We would have missed the gorillas if we couldn't keep up."

We'd like to hear from you.
