Chalfont St Giles man jailed for attempted robbery
A Chalfont St Giles man was sentenced to 15 years in prison this week for an attempted robbery in Berkshire ten years ago.
Gary Mills, 32, of Fleetwood Close, was handed the sentence at Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty to a host of offences including attempted robbery, possession of a firearm with intent to cause violence, dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.
The charges dated back to May 14, 1998 when Mills and two accomplices attempted to steal diamond jewellery from a couple in Berkshire blocking the gated entrance to their home and attacking them in their car.
As Mills tried to grab the jewellery from the woman's finger she bit his finger and ear and, after he left empty handed, it was these injuries which resulted in his capture.
The robber went on the run and was nearly caught on May 31, 1998 when armed officers tracked him down in a vehicle in west London before he mounted the pavement and rammed a police car as he escaped.
After fleeing to Malaga, Spain he was extradited by the authorities on May 14, 2007 when his DNA was linked to both incidents in Berkshire and west London.
Detective Chief Inspector Craig Turner said, "Mills has been caught with the use of forensic technology coupled with the bravery of a female victim determined to prevent the theft of her diamond jewels.
His brazen disregard for other's safety in evading police by driving along a busy pavement shows just how dangerous an individual he is".
