Hopes for new St Giles cycle path
A new cycle path could soon be built between Chalfont St Peter and Chalfont St Giles if Bucks County Council can secure funding for it.
If the route is built, it will run along Narcot Lane between the two villages, starting near the Chalfonts Community College and ending at the roundabout in Chalfont St Giles near to the White Hart pub.
It is hoped that the path will encourage more cyclists to use the road, especially students living in Chalfont St Giles who travel to and from school every day.
It is estimated that the overall cost of putting in the new path will come to around £350,000 and on Monday night, members of BCC visited Chalfont St Peter parish council's meeting to try and secure some of the funds towards it.
The parish council eventually agreed to contribute up to £10,000 for the scheme, and Chalfont St Giles parish council has also agreed to put up some of the funds needed.
However, not all Chalfont St Peter's parish councillors were convinced about the need for the path.
Giles Heath said: "I just can't think of a queue of cyclist waiting to use this path. You do not see many people using it at the moment so why is it assumed that there will be suddenly be a huge stack of them if a cycle path is put in. I know that there are a lot of students at the Community College, but not all of them live in Chalfont St Giles; they come in from places like Denham and Iver, so they are not going to use it."
Bucks County Councillor Martin Tett was also at the meeting. He said: "People drive far too fast down Narcot Lane and parents would be hesitant to let their children cycle along it at the moment. A lot of people are not confident cyclists and I am sure that they are put off using that route because of the fast moving traffic. I think that there is definitely a place for a cycle route down that road and I am very supportive of it."

I prefer it if the money was spent on a Tram between Chalfont St Peter car park and Chalfont St Giles at Merlins, following the Misbourne path.
This would give a good link between the two villages and also be a tourist attraction which could pay for itself.
I cycled down the proposed route today,during which time i spent most of the time in the middle of my lane dodging pot-holes and sunken draincovers.
If the cycle path was to go ahead I will use it.
I met 4 other cyclists(3 different parties) using this route during the few minutes i was there,just goes to show people do still cycle between the villages.
i have to use that path everyday to get to school, and i know of at least 15 other people which use the path in winter. And a further 10 more in the summer period. It would be a great idea to build the cycle path as it will make it easier to get to school and back, it will look better than an old bumpy path covered in horse excrement and thorns. A brilliant idea. go ahead.
