Attempted car thefts prompt Chalfont St Giles police patrols
Police patrols are to be stepped up in Chalfont St Giles following two incidents during the weekend of March 7 and 8, where vehicles in School Lane and Bottrells Lane were badly vandalised during foiled car thefts.
PCSO Gavin McVeigh of Chalfont St Giles police confirmed that a team of eight officers are to mount an on-going police operation, involving foot patrols in the village and visits to shops that sell alcohol.
Mr McVeigh said that the first of such patrols was carried out on the night of Thursday, March 12, when shopkeepers were warned not to sell alcohol to under age customers and several youths were spoken to by police.
"We moved lots of kids on, because residents are fed up with them and we're clamping down," he said.
He added that police and residents believe that most of the trouble in the village is caused by a group of five boys and girls, aged between 12 and 16.
Mr McVeigh declined to say when patrols would be carried out, adding that the police intend to surprise the young criminals.
"We are increasing our patrols at all hours of the day," said Mr McVeigh.
"Any person identified causing criminal damage or anti-social behaviour will be robustly dealt with."
Margaret Dale, Neighbourhood Watch advisor for South Bucks and Chiltern areas, said: "We are asking people to phone in and let the police know and let each other know what's happened, to help the police form a fuller picture. Every little helps."
Parish councillor Gordon Patrick said: "These little devils phone round when they see a police car and melt into the background.
"We need foot patrols and policemen back on the beat."
PCSO Gavin McVeigh confirmed that some police patrols will be conducted on foot and others in unmarked vehicles, by officers familiar with the area and "who know all the hiding-places."
