Flexmore farm owners welcome new buffalo calves
Buffalo calves are a very welcome addition to Flexmore Farm in Chalfont St Giles, where farmers Vicky and Stephen Hinds have plans to sell leather goods made from buffalo hide.
Mrs Hinds explained that the farm currently has 31 buffalo and seven new-born calves.
"We hope take the hide, which a local student will fashion into leather goods, which will be stamped with Chalfont St Giles," she said.
Mrs Hinds and her husband Stephen sell pasture-fed buffalo meat and are hoping to produce mozzarella cheese from buffalo milk this summer.
Mrs Hinds added that the farm is also home to some 100 rare breed Berkshire pigs, whose sausage meat won 1st and 2nd prizes at the Royal Smithfield Christmas Show in December.
She said that the farm has discounted its prices on some of the more expensive cuts of pork, such as tenderloin, in a bid to encourage people to support Buckinghamshire's pig farms, as part of a national campaign started by TV chef Jamie Oliver.
"Some farms are losing as much as £20 per pig," she said.
Flexmore Farm will be holding a hog-roast and hoe down on June 13 and will also open to the public on May 10, as part of Chalfont St Giles' open gardens day.
