Gillan taken to task over expenses

CHERYL Gillan, MP for the Chalfonts, Chesham and Amersham, has been blasted by her constituents this week after it was revealed that she claimed for three tins of dog food on her expenses.
Mrs Gillan, who is the shadow Welsh secretary, was found to have submitted a Sainsbury's receipt for £27.25 for groceries which included £4.47 worth of pet food.

The news came to light as part of the Daily Telegraph's revelations about MPs' expense claims which have rocked Westminster this week.
According to the figures, Mrs Gillan charged the taxpayer for one £3.69 bag of Iams senior chicken dry meal for older dogs, and two 39p tins of chicken and turkey meat.
Mrs Gillan has since apologised for making the claims, and has vowed to pay back the money.
However, her constituents in this area have been appalled at the news.
Kenneth Smith, of Chalfont St Peter, said: "I think it's ridiculous. Claiming for things like dog food is completely out of order and shows the attitude of modern day politicians.
"Everything to do with these expense claims disgusts me. The things that they have been claiming for are outrageous, but to learn that our own MP has been up to it as well is very saddening."
The reports also showed that in April 2008, Mrs Gillan claimed for a £72.27 gas bill, despite her account being £26.72 in credit, and that she had claimed £305.50 to fix her boiler.
Janine Squires of Old Amersham said: "It's just really disappointing. I think that she has let her constituents down by doing this. It's good that she has said she'll repay the money but it should not have happened in the first place."
A statement from Mrs Gillan, released by the Conservative party press office, said: "I mistakenly submitted a food bill which contained items for which I did not intend to claim back. I am sorry for this and will immediately repay the amount.
"I pay my gas bills by direct debit and claim for the gas used when the bills arrive. In one year two gas bills - actually sent by the gas company - contained duplicate information for a period of three months. This was identified by the fees office so the payment to me was reduced accordingly.
"The boiler broke down and was repaired by a plumber. This is within the rules."
