Swine flu hits Gerrards Cross school
A CASE of swine flu has been reported at a Gerrards Cross school, the first such reported incident in the area.
Maltman's Green School sent a letter home to parents on Monday night telling them that one of the girls had contracted the illness and it was now up to them whether to continue to send their children in.
Although schools across the country were closing if any of their pupils became ill when the disease started, most are now staying open as it has become more widespread.
Council guidelines currently say that schools should remain open and parents given the choice of whether to keep their children away if a case of swine flu is reported.
Head teacher Joanna Pardon said: "We have been open and up front about this with parents, and let them know about it as soon as we found out.
"It is now up to them if they send their children to school. I know that there are several other schools in this area that have had reports of their pupils having the illness, but they have not been as open about it as we have. We thought that parents should have the right to know.
"This is not a reflection on our school, where hygiene standards are very high, but I sent the letter because I thought it was important that parents should know and be given the choice about what to do next."
Swine flu is continuing to spread across the country, and has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation.
One parent at the school, who asked not to be named, said: "I was shocked to hear the news, but I think the school have been very honest about it and that is the right way of dealing with it.
"I haven't decided yet whether to keep my daughter out of school, but it is good to have been told exactly what the situation is."
